With no modifications to the application, it is possible to test the application using recorded or manually written test scripts in different scripting languages. Squish is a very open and flexible system to allow easy integration in existing test environments Evaluated Version: Squish 1.3.0beta1 Next Release Version: Squish 2.0 Purpose The purpose of this evaluation is the verify the features and functionalities of Squish, attesting tool from froglogic software. This report also compare the features of squish, KD Executor and Silktest.(The vendor details are covered in the Appendix I) 1. A mail from the SilkTest vendor confirms the same. Segue does not have any plans to support Qt®/C++ applications near feture. “ QT is from TROLLTECH. Unfortunately SilkTest will only get customwin recognition of these objects due to the classes not being based on MFC. Class-mapping is also nearly impossible due to SilkTest recognising all the classes within such an application as a 'QTWidget' class regardless of them being pushbutton, radiolist or any other GUI control. Unfortunately SilkTest doesn't support QT at present and there are no plans to implement this support in the future. Hence we are evaluating this tool which supports Qt applications.
Features Platforms: 1. Supports all the platforms that Qt supports (Windows, Linux, MacOS X, Solaris, HP-UX, AIX, IRIX, FreeBSD and Tru64) 2. Squish supports Qt. The Qt application can be tested by squish without any modifications to the scripts. It is also possible to test the application using recorded or manually written test scripts in different scripting languages such as Tcl, Python or Javascript. Product Support: 1. Squish Integrates well with Qt and allows calling Qt & Qt AUT APIs 2. The latest Qt versions can be handled by changing the QT Path environment variable in the system as long as the Squish version supports that particular Qt version. Scripting language support: 1. The scripting language supported by Squish are a. Tcl b. Python c. Javascript 2. Squish IDE provides setting to change the scripting language used anytime. 3. The API references are available. 4. Facilitates reusable scripting using functions & shared libraries. 5. Squish uses existing scripting languages, rather than requiring the user to learn a proprietary language. These scripting languages are easy to learn & implement. 6. Future release of Squish is going to support Perl Record & Playback: 1. Squish supports Record & Playback of scripts. Test Report generator: 1. Squish has a report generator which can generate the results in XML. 2. There are modules for nearly every scripting language available to parse XML, so it is quite easy to post-process the test results and convert them to the format required. Commandline & Remote Execution: 1. Squish supports both command line execution and remote execution of scripts. 2. The test scripts can be centralized allowing testing applications on different machines and platforms remotely. 3. Squish runs a server (squishserver) that handles the communication between the test script and the AUT. The test script is executed by the squishrunner tool, and connects to the squishserver. 4. The AUT uses Squish's hook library to connect to the server. This library allows the test script to inspect the application remotely via the socket connection. Recovery: 1. The Squish test script and the AUT always run in two separate processes, hence even if the AUT crashes, it should never crash the test script execution. Shared Installation: 1. The Squish application can be build in one system and shared in other machines 2. The built executables and libraries can be reused. 3. To allow all licensed users to access Squish over a shared network location, the bin, lib and etc directories should be made accessible through system share Internationalization: 1. Squish has Unicode support. Data driven testing: 1. Scripts & Data stored in regular file.

2. Supports CVS formats for test data 3. Support for importing MS Excel is also available in Squish 2.0 (next version). Debugging Features: 1. Debugger is embedded with the tool 2. Breakpoints is a feature in the tool. 3. Step , Step-into features are available Spy: 1. The Squish Spy tool is used in identifying the Qt widges used in the application 2. Similar to MSVS Spy++, Squish spy can identify the QtWidge classes used in the AUT. 3. Recognize widges & high level events. 4. Spy allows Squish to hook up to a running application to inspect its objects properties and methods by either clicking on objects in the application or by navigating the object tree view. 5. The squish spy is also non-intrusive and doesn't require any modifications to the application to work. Object Map: 1. Squish has an object map feature. 2. In a test script, objects are accessed by looking up the object via its fully qualified name which consists of the names of the parent objects and the name of the object itself 3. This feature eases the maintenance of test scripts when the application under test changes its object hierarchy or object names. Technical Support: 1. The technical / product support is very quick in responding queries. 2. The response times to e-mail support queries are usually less than a day Product support details 1. Evaluatation or purchase :[email protected] 2. Questions regarding Squish :[email protected]. 3. The forum for Squish users and froglogic's developers :[email protected] 4. Mailing list : http://www.froglogic.com/mailman/listinfo/squish-users. Issues: 1. The Qt 4.0 is not yet released. Hence the evaluation version of Squish 1.3.0 didn’t support Qt4.0 SWOT Analysis STRENGTH WEAKNESS • Easy scripting language • Ability to choose the desired scripting (Tcl, Python & Javascript) & future support for Perl • Objects identification using Spy • Spy filters • Object map to map the logical name of the objects. • Supports ActiveX, low level X11 & Tk support • Can call Qt & AUT APIs from test scripts. • Has Qt toolkit wrapper support • Debugger is avaliable • Current version of Squish doesn’t support Qt4.0 till its official release. • Both AUT & Squish should be linked to same Qt library • Squish is not a complete test suite for test management. • Does not support for non-Qt applications OPPORTUNITY THREAT • Create a basic testing framework for all Qt application testing. • N/A Comparitive Analysis This session compares the features between Silktest (Segue), KD Executor (Klarälvdalens Datakonsult AB) and Squish (froglogic) # Features Silk Test Squish KD Executor 1 Company Segue Froglogic KDAB 2 Version 7.X Squis 1.3 beta 2.1 3 Supported Platform Windows All platfoms supported by Qt All platforms supported by Qt 4 Supported Languages VC++, Java Only Qt Only Qt 5 Record and Playback Yes Yes Yes 6 Scripting Language 4 Test TCL, Python and JavaScript Java Script, XML 7 Object Oriented Yes No No 8 Exception Handling Yes Yes No 9 Data Driven Testing Yes Yes No 10 Debugger for Script Yes Yes No 11 Internationalization & Localization Yes Yes No 12 Recovery System Yes No No 13 Support for Client/Server Test Yes Yes No 14 Multi-Application Testing Yes No No 15 Bitmap Testing Yes No No 16 Command Line Execution Yes Yes Yes 17 Self executable Testcases No No Yes 18 Test Report Yes Yes Yes 19 Remote Execution Yes Yes Yes 20 Shared Installation Yes Yes No 21 Spy Yes Yes No 22 Object Map Yes Yes No
